Water Doubles

Summary
  • Series A. At Cheltenham, poorman double at central pond (both dogs)
  • Series B. At Cheltenham, poorman double at pines channel (both dogs)
  • Series C. At Cheltenham, another poorman double at pines channel (both dogs)
Series A, B, C. Following Alice's thoughts about making land-water-land more interesting for Laddie, I set up a total of six poorman doubles, three for Lumi, three for Laddie, alternating dogs at each location. I brought out a lining pole for the SL, plus a chair for one throwing station and stickman for the other, and fired a pistol for each throw. It was a gorgeous, sunny day in the high 70s.

At each location, I ran Lumi first with Laddie in the nearby van, to build motivation for him. Then I let Lumi honor Laddie, so that he would know that I could always send her to the memory "bird" (I used white dummies) if he didn't come back.

Lumi's doubles each consisted of two cheaters, intended to be within her ability but with enough suction to require some handling. One was too difficult and I had to move around on the shore to keep her on course, but the others worked well, and all but one did require some handling.

Laddie's doubles each consisted of an interesting but easy (for Laddie) open water retrieve, and a land-water-land retrieve.

Alice nailed it with her advice. It seems clear that Laddie didn't need any more drills on LWL. He had his alligator entries, and now it was time for some real retriever work, in which the LWL was chaned from the focus of the drill to table stakes for playing the game.

LADDIE'S FIRST POORMAN DOUBLE
  • #1 was 40 yards across wetland and a 30-yard swim with the fall in open water.
  • #2 was across wetland and a swim-depth channel, with a possible cheating opportunity to the right, into a clump of tall grass on the other side.
The running order was #2-1. Laddie came straight back with #2 and, while coming to heel to deliver, locked his sights on #1. When sent, he then raced out to retrieve #1.

LADDIE'S SECOND POORMAN DOUBLE
  • #1 was into open water.
  • #2 was across the pines channel, well inland on the far side.
The running order was again #2-1. #2 was the identical LWL we've been working on at the pines channel, except that I threw from beside the chair while Laddie sat at the lining pole with Lumi, I fired a shot, and the throw was 10' inland on the far shore, further than I've ever tried Laddie on before. When I released Laddie to #2, he swam across the channel, ran to the dummy, and came racing back with it, then came to heel so I could send him out for #1.

LADDIE'S THIRD POORMAN DOUBLE
  • #1 was a good long throw into a stick pond, also populated by several decoys.
  • #2 was across Lumi's swim-by pond, with the fall up on land behind a pine tree. It was possible to run the bank to the left.
Again, the running order was #2-1. Laddie swam across the pond and climbed out, shook off, picked up the dummy, and glanced toward the land route. I immediately blew WS, then cast an angle-in the other way. He responded perfectly, sitting, then entering the water to the right without another thought of taking the land route. When he delivered, he was jumping out of his skin for me to release him to #1.

Series D.
