- Series A. At Cheltenham, cheating singles in the area of the pines channel (Lumi)
- Series B. At Cheltenham, land-water-land (LWL) retrieves at the pines channel (Laddie)
Series A. Series A consisted of three cheating singles for Lumi, two short cheaters in the first session, then a longer and more difficult one in the second session. Descriptions of the retrieves:
- 30 yards from SL to shoreline, 50 yards from shoreline to fall at far shoreline, straight entry to water, opportunities to run banks on both sides at near end, open on both sides at far end
- 10 yards from SL to shoreline, 70 yards from shoreline to fall in open water, straight entry to water, opportunity to run bank on left at near end, opportunity to run bank on right at far end
- 20 yards from SL to shoreline, 100 yards from shoreline to fall in open water (stickpond with several decoys), 45° diagonal entry to water, opportunity to run bank on right entire length, opportunity to run bank on left except for 30 yards on near end
- On #1, Lumi started to veer right to run bank on the send-out. She responded nicely to WS and angle-back cast into the water
- Lumi had no problem with #2. As she was swimming out, the dummy drifted toward the right bank. When Lumi picked the dummy up, she turned away from the bank. I thought that was good.
- On #3, Lumi started to veer right at water's edge. It did not appear that she was attempting to run the bank, but was just looking for an easier entry point. I blew WS, called Here, another WS, and angle-back cast. Lumi responded well and took the desired entry, followed by a straight swim to the dummy. On the return, she drifted a little toward the right bank. I blew WS but did not require her to stop, immediately cued Over. She immediately responded and navigated the center of the channel the rest of the way, coming out exactly where she had gone in
In the first session, Laddie's performance was not quite as good as the last time we trained at this location a couple of days ago, and included two brief maroons. I believe that was primarily because we trained on the large pond and at the west channel yesterday, and Laddie lost some of his confidence on LWL retrieves. When he marooned, I didn't need to drive away, I just walked to the van and Laddie picked up the dummy and swam back.
Another reason for Laddie's poor performance may be associated with the fact that he's almost stopped eating the last three days. He does not appear ill, he's just not interested in food. The last time he behaved that way, Sophie, Heather's Border Collie who lives in our basement, was in heat. Although Sophie is not in heat now as far as I know, it's possible another bitch in the neighborhood is. If that's the case, it may be affecting Laddie's state of mind and making his training difficult.
Laddie's last retrieve of the first session was an unusual combination for Laddie. It was difficult to get him to complete the swim to the far bank, requiring a number of Back and Over cues. He attempted to swim back to me, and also to swim to the left within the channel. Yet when he finally got to the far bank, he ran to the dummy, picked it up, and brought it straight back. At that point, I put him in the van, then let Lumi out to work with her for a few minutes.
In Laddie's second session, his performance was much improved from the first session. He only ran three retrieves:
- Dummy thrown to far shore. Laddie returned without hesitation.
- Dummy thrown 5' inland. When Laddie hesitated on his return, I cued Here, and he responded immediately.
- Dummy again thrown 5' inland. Just as Laddie was about to reach the far shore on his swim out, he started to turn around and I cued Back. Laddie responded immediately, climbed onto shore, ran to the dummy, picked it up, and immediately ran and swam back with it.
